With the holidays right around the corner, I thought this would be the perfect time to share my first food post. Every year I make a cheese ball but this year I decided to change it up and give it a little twist. Once I gave it a try, I really wanted to share this recipe because I like it so much. It was easy enough for my 4-year-old to help out, plus, I didn’t cost much.
I got the inspiration for this while I was scrolling through Pinterest (surprise!) But the recipe I saw was a little different because they used bacon and nuts (pecans I think,) in their balls and I opted for totally different ingredients.
So for my version here is what you are going to need:
- Cream cheese
- Green onions
- Pretzel sticks
- Worcestershire sauce
- Cheddar cheese
- Dried beef
Here’s what I did:
In a large bowl, I mixed together one package of cream cheese with half a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, a little salt, pepper, and paprika. Then I separated the mixture into three bowls. In the first bowl, I added only green onion because that is the way my husband likes his cheese balls. In the next bowl, I added pickle, green onion, and dried beef. And in the last bowl, I added only cheddar cheese.
After everything is all mixed with the cream cheese I used a teaspoon-sized measuring scoop to make small balls. A melon baller probably would have worked better but I didn’t have one on hand so I worked with what I had.
Once all the balls were made I put them on a piece of wax paper on a plate and stuck them in the fridge. After about 30 (once they had firmed up a bit,) I got them back out of the fridge so I could put the pretzels into them. For the balls with the pickles in them, I added a little more of the beef to the outside before I added the pretzel sticks.
And that is really all there was to it. It really was super easy! And after trying the three flavor combinations my favorite for sure is the pickle, onion, and beef.
What I will do differently next time:
When I do make them again for Thanksgiving or Christmas I will wait to put the pretzels in them. After they sat for a while they got a little soggy (which is to be expected but I didn’t think about beforehand.) Or honestly, I may just set the ball on a cracker and cut the pretzel stick out altogether. Also, I think I’ll add a little bit of green onion to the cheddar cheese balls because they didn’t have as much flavor.
Overall I absolutely loved this updated cheese ball recipe. I loved that the size was perfect for the kids to eat without making a huge mess. I’ve already decided pickle is going to be present in every cheese ball I make from this day forward(: Do you have a favorite cheese ball recipe? If so share it below, I’d love to give it a try!!
